Balikpapan

Balikpapan is a clean small city located on the East Coast of Kalimantan and is well known for it's slow pace and relaxing lifestyle.

The traditional Dayak tribe still inhabit Balikpapan and the surrounding areas. Dayak continue their culture, women are known for their pierced ear lobes stretched with gold or brass rings and the men are know for their distinctive tatoos. In the past the Dayak people lived in communal buildings known as long houses which are built on tall posts above the ground.

Mahakam River is approximately one and a half hours from Balikpapan and stretches from the ocean almost to the middle of Kalimantan. River tours operate safaris down Mahakam River, allowing passengers to experience Kalimantan jungle and forests.

Balikpapan, is a sleepy city, with limited nightlife, however is well known for it's popular traditional markets selling a range of products; the most sought after items being gem stones and jewelry.

  • Visit the largest natural Orchid Forest.
  • Take a relaxing river safari down the Mahakam River
