Solo City
Solo City or Surakarta is just one hour's drive northeast of Yogyakarta and is bordered by the Solo River.
Solo is a smaller city than Jog, although still rich in it's own heritage and culture.
Like Jog, Solo is famous for it's Batik products, however Batik in Solo has it's own original style and can be found at the Pasar Klewer markets. Solo is also known as an agricultural centre with crops such as rice, coffee and tobacco cultivated here.
Whilst in Solo it is recommended you visit the Mankunegaran Keraton (Royal Palace). This wonder gives an insight to the Royal Family of Solo and the struggles which the City had to overcome. A museum of old wartime weapons, past rulers and ancient traditional dress is also on show.
Solo's traditional food is sought after by the Javanese, with the two most popular dishes being Lumpia or soft fresh spring rolls and Lapis Surabaya which is a soft sweet cake.
