Surabaya

Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java, is Indonesia’s second largest city and boasts a proud and distinguished history. The city is more fondly known to Indonesians as ‘The City of Heroes’ as it was the site of an historic battle which is of great importance in the Nations struggle for Independence.

The name Surabaya is made up of two words sura / suro, meaning shark, and baya / boyo, meaning crocodile which according to a local myth fought each other for supremacy over the area. The titanic battle is depicted in a statue located near the entrance to the city zoo and is now the icon of the city. (see image)

The city is well connected to the rest of Java and is only half an hour away from Bali and just over an hour from Jakarta by air.

Adventure lovers should make the worthwhile trek to Mount Bromo and experience watching the sunrise from the crest of the great Volcano. Then go to Mt Kawi and experience the mysticism of the gravesite of an ancient sage believed to have the power to extend blessings from beyond the grave to those making the pilgrimage.
