Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta: (pronounced Jog-jakarta) is a lively city in the heart of Java and is only a 1 hour flight from either Bali or Jakarta. It is a city which boasts a diverse culture and ancient heritage with an abundance of buildings and monuments to explore.

Like most cities throughout Indonesia, Yogyakarta is fantastic for shopping. It is home to a number of shopping malls such as Galleria Mall, Plaza Ambarrukmo and Matahari Department store. For the best bargains in town however, take a stroll down Jalan Malioboro, which is where local crafts and good Batik can be found.

A popular tourist attraction is the Keraton or Sultan's Palace. Here you will experience first hand how the Sultan and the Royal Family live, you can even book to have morning tea with the Royal Family as well as a tour of this grand residence!

Just outside Yogyakarta are two famous temples - Prambanan and Borobudur. Prambanan is approximately 30 minutes drive and represents the Hindu religion. Borobudur is the largest known Buddhist temple and is approximately 1 hour's drive from the centre of Jog. Borobudur is best experienced at sunrise where you will experience breathtaking views mixed with true ancient culture.
